Job Description

Programme Lead, Barclays Digital

Significant contributor in defining and instigating the Barclays UK Ways of Working initiative. This programme of work looked to take the practical learnings from the pool of Barclaycard delivery and define/rollout the resulting delivery methodology across Barclays. Primarily targeted with moving to an Agile delivery framework across the business, technical and delivery teams.

Programme Lead, Barclaycard Digital Office

Programme lead with accountability for technical delivery (time, cost and quality) of Barclaycard Germany's re-launch of the internet and mobile channels.

Immediate need to re-baseline costs and schedules to achieve a realistic minimal viable product within acceptable timelines. Instigated an approach whereby the team moved towards continuous development and deployment through the delivery of a revised platform and Agile delivery framework.

Re-aligned delivery team to revised scope and targets, revitalised the daily stand-ups with a focus on individual targets and collective ownership and introduction of Kanban. Identified a culture of passive problem solving whereby issues were generally passed on from task and ownership perspective. Instilled a revised approach of escalation and tracking (while maintaining ownership). Immediate effect was a noticeable shift in morale with a positive attitude to delivery and belief in hitting individual and team targets.

Programme Lead, Barclaycard Data Team

Headed up programme across several work streams delivering the Barclaycard Big Data platform. Upon taking over the role established control framework and budget support against re-alignment of work schedule.

As a result of strong leadership and stakeholder engagement the programme was able to stay on its agreed delivery trajectory against a back drop of localised resource and broader business prioritisation challenges.

Ultimately the programme has delivered Barclays' first Hadoop (Big Data) cluster within agreed timescales, scope and budget.

Programme Lead, Digital Consumer Payments

Lead programme development and delivery for Barclaycard's strategic bPay launch with accountability for all aspects of delivery including the development and agreement of the programme plan with all workstream leads.

Lead the programme delivery (time, cost and quality) working creatively to minimise risk and find alternative ways to deliver faster and more efficiently. Managed and delivered programme to budget and optimised spend – managed all workstreams to budget and managed the risk and opportunities log across the programme (full audit trail) through weekly detailed review and exception management to avoid overspend while ensuring effective and accurate cost reporting and governance.

Drove collaborative and effective team working and partner relationships encouraging a flexible ‘can do’ attitude at every point of contact to meet the demands of the programme. Clear roles & responsibilities communicated to all workstream leads, clear reviews while holding team to account for delivery.

Ensured high quality reports at every level, coaching workstream leads to articulate status, risks and issues with a clear path to green if off-track. Effective RAIDS management – adopting a ‘no surprises’ approach and employing creative strategies to mitigate risk. Developed stakeholder approval timelines to ensure enough time allowed for multiple reviews and final sign off before deadline, and an approvals audit trail.

Business Solutions Lead, Barclaycard Europe

Lead on the research, analysis, recommendations and communications on the Barclaycard UK elements of the business and technical strategic landscape. Identifying critical and toxic elements requiring budget allocation or re-direction. Lead, co-ordinated and compiled the broader Barclaycard European equivalent positioning documentation.

Head of Delivery, Digital Consumer Payments

Leading on the re-shaping of the Digital Consumer Payments Delivery team. Bringing the delivery portfolio back in line in relation to financial governance. Through this exercise the proposition portfolio was re-defined and extensive negotiations were completed to ensure that the correct financial structure and controls were in place which in turn resulted in the re-shaping of the delivery team to meet timeline and cost objectives.

Business Implementation, Digital Consumer Payments

Advocate and lead in bringing together the Digital Consumer Payments commercial, change and technical resources across the business into a ‘One Team’ delivery environment. This ‘garage’ approach has been subsequently endorsed through all levels up to Retail & Business Banking (RBB) Executive level and through co-location with alignment of processes, communications and priorities ensured team buy-in against approach/objectives.

Alan Barnes contributed to several publications on comprehensive education and school management. He was able to show how a large school in the most unpromising environment could become a beacon of hope in the community and how firm and principled leadership was the basis of success.
